Laura Townsend, Senior Support Worker for Augusta Care

The role of Senior Support Worker is to help organise Augusta Care services around the people we support. Senior Support Workers help ensure the people we support receive care that is tailored to their specific needs. Each member of our team plays such an important role in the smooth delivery of our services. So much so, every now and then, we like to place them under the spotlight. This month, the spotlight is on Laura Townsend. Laura joined the team seven and a half years ago.

Tell us about your time with Augusta Care
My first role here was in respite services. Then I moved to a residential home and eventually became Deputy Manager there. Most recently, I became a Senior Support Worker for Augusta Care. I have found one of the advantages of working for a company like this is the opportunity for growth within the company. I think my story demonstrates that quite clearly.

Describe your average day
I'm not sure I have an average day - it varies so much on a daily basis! I really like the variation too. In general I help manage the delivery of services to the people we support.

Our ethos is to empower adults with learning disabilities to live independently. So we have a range of service providers who supply the people we support with a variety of activities in their own homes. This relates to things like support with personal care, household tasks, food shopping, and going places such as bowling and the cinema. We do not follow a one size fits all approach, so there is a lot of planning and preparation which has to take place before such daily activities can run smoothly. I am involved in ensuring these services are provided to the highest possible standard, and that the services provided suit the particular needs of each person we support.

I also spend time in the office doing rotas and paperwork, I attend reviews, and I help the people we support to attend their appointments.

What do you like best about your role?
I love the variety of supporting different people. It means my day and working life is full of surprises and very fulfilling. For example, I recently went to Disneyland Paris with two people we support. Jessica and Kathleen are flatmates who had aspirations to visit Disneyland Paris. So we provided the necessary support to make that happen. See the Augusta Care Facebook Page for pictures and more details about that story. Please make sure you 'like' our Page too!

What do you like to do in your leisure time?
I like to relax, spending time with my family and being active. I also enjoy visiting new places.

What is your favourite holiday destination?
I love going anywhere hot. I have recently traveled to Thailand which is somewhere I had always wanted to visit.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that we might not know?
I recently got engaged whilst on holiday in Thailand!

Describe yourself in three words?
Fun, creative and confident.

Marmite – love it or hate it?
Hate it!
